How to manage a business card design project | Quality Printing London

6 November 2017

Fantastic, you have just been appointed by your prestigious client to design their new business card…. but before you go ahead and get started on the design it is important to consider a few things right at the start of the project. Here are our top tips from the print perspective of details to establish early with your client (and take our word for it that they will save you lots of time later on!)

1. Establish your client’s budget

The most important question you can ask at an early stage of the design project is what kind of budget your client has for producing their business cards as this will affect the choice of print processes and materials available to them, which will in turn affect the design of the cards. You will also need to check how many cards they are looking to have printed and for how many names within this budget so you can work out roughly how much they are willing to spend per set of cards.

Foil on colorplan is a popular choice for its luxury look and feel but can be a more expensive option.

2. Get a brief from your client and their branding guidelines

Once you have established your clients budget you should discuss with your client what they are looking for in terms of the design. Your client may give you a brief or some branding guidelines if they need you to use specific colours on the design…now you are ready to get started!

3. Determine materials and print processes

During the design stage you can discuss what types of materials or print processes your client would like. Always keep in mind their budget for the project and the fact that the more processes required the more expensive the cards will be. If you are unsure of which print processes or materials will fit into your client’s budget you can always discuss this with your printer, who should be able to offer you guidance.

Adding a print process such as Solways digital embossing is similarly effective but more affordable

4. Check your client’s deadline

It is important to manage your client’s expectations and so establishing a deadline for your project is essential at an early stage. If your client has a particular deadline you should alert your printer to this when you first approach them with your project so that they can advise you whether they are able to meet the deadline. Even if your client does not have a deadline always approach your printer as soon as you have a good idea of the design (even if it is not yet finalised) and processes to give them  plenty of time to understand your requirements offer advice and then print the job to their highest standards.
